Joe “Pops” Cates
Mr. Glenden Joe Cates was born on April 18,1936 in Wells, Texas and left to go to Heaven at 6am on Monday, May 22, 2017 at the age of 81.
Joe joined the US Army from May 7,1953 and Corporal Cates with Honorable Discharge to November 15, 1955. Then Corporal Cates joined the US Navy November 1955 serving on Aircraft Carrier USS Bon Homme Richard CUA31 in the Far East with Honorable Discharge on May 7, 1961
Joe worked at the Lufkin Papermill and owned His own Muffler shop. Early ’60s was race car driver and drove the ski boat for skiers putting on shows where they would stack skiers in a pyramid. Retired from Brown & Root Halliburton after 26 yrs. in 2001. Then built his wife & his home in Liberty, Texas. He enjoyed going to his sons Shane & wife Lori’s Performance shop, enjoyed taking care of his grand babies. Love doing BBQ cookoffs and barbequing for all his family friends. Helping with the summer camp for Maranatha Church, and was attending Crosby Church later.
Joe was proceeded in death by His parents Mr. Farris Cates & Mrs.Annie Cates, brothers Billy Ray & Donnie Cates, nephews Billy Ray jr, & Marty Ray Cates, niece Beverley Cates, daughter Tammy Shuttle and grand son Nickolas Hecht.
He leaves behind his wife Bobbie Sue Dean- Cates which his shared his life with for 31 wonderful blessed years.
Brothers James Taylor & wife Patsy of Etoile, Bobby & wife Shirley of Lufkin, and Douglas & wife Paulette of Zavalla, TX.
Sons Joe Luce of Lufkin, Shane & wife Lori Cates of Humble, Michael Myers & wife Leslie of Liberty, Rick & wife Alana Harlow of Baytown.
Daughters Janet & husband Jose Gutierrez of Clear Lake , Lisa & husband Rex Hecht of San Antonia, Texas , Tracy Burnett of Port Aransas , Margaret & husband Tony Ramsey of Mississippi. Twenty four grand babies and nine great grandbabies. Numerous nieces,nephews, great nieces, nephews, great, great nieces, nephews, whom loved him deeply and will be greatly missed by family & friends..
Joe touch so many young men & women lives helping to guided them to their careers. Him & his wife never knew when got up in the morning that their home would be full of not only their own & others children at anytime of the week. A celebration of Joe’s life is scheduled for June 2, 2017 from 2:00pm – 7:00pm at Crosby Church.
