Joan Marie Young Speir died at age 92 on August 30,2017 nine days after the death of her beloved husband of 72 years, George. She was born to parents, George and Lucy Young, on July 21, 1925 in New Orleans, Louisiana. At age five her family moved to Philadelphia. Joan was the oldest of four children and she was preceded in death by her sister Betty and her brother George. Her brother Joe survives her.
On June 2, 1945 Joan and George were married in Philadelphia. After the war, they made their home there until the mid-1950s. Their family grew with the arrival of Elizabeth, George III, Janet and Karen. In 1956, when her husband took a position in the petroleum industry, the family moved to Colombia, South America where they lived for eight years. It was quite an adventure for the family and Joan really enjoyed the easy lifestyle in the tropics. Son David joined the family in 1963. Returning to the States in 1964, the family moved to Barrington, Illinois. In 1973, they moved to Houston and soon settled into their home on the Champions Golf Course. Joan was an avid bridge player, enjoyed golf and reading. She especially loved traveling the world with George. Some of her favorite places were Bali, Hong Kong, Paris, and Rome. Joan always enjoyed cooking holiday meals for her family. The wonderful cruises they treated the entire family to were full of fun and laughter.
Joan was a devoted and loving wife to her sweet George. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother to her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Joan is survived by her children and their spouses, Elizabeth and Hans Stroessler of Chicago, Il, George and Eileen Speir of Chicago, Il, Janet and Paul Carroll of Houston, TX, Karen Speir of Houston, TX and David Speir of Houston, TX. She is survived by 5 grandchildren and their spouses, Amy and Mike Foy of Chicago, Il, Kristin and Danny Capezio of Chicago, Il, Jennifer and Sam Hendricks of Houston, TX, Mark and Karin Stroessler of Westlake, OH and Jonathan and Whitney Speir of Chicago, Il. She is survived by 4 great-grandchildren, Ashley Stroessler of Chicago, Il, Kate and Nick Hendricks of Houston, TX and Joshua Stroessler of Westlake, OH.
A memorial mass will take place on September 14, 2017 at 10:30 am at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church (6646 Addicks- Satsuma Rd., Houston, TX 77084) with lunch to follow at Spring Creek BBQ (5935 Highway 6, Houston, TX 77084). All are welcome to attend and celebrate the life of Joan Speir.
